[And he's still stubbornly hopping along. He drops rather roughly onto the bed next to him.

He's quiet for a good long while. His hands curl into fists and he lowers his head.] I'm sorry, Philip.

[ He looks away once Shotaro is sitting beside him. He doesn't even know what to say.

Not until Shotaro makes that apology, anyway. He looks back up at him in confusion. ]

Sorry? Why?

Because it was my idea to go in there in the first place.

I'm the one who made the decision to accompany you, Shotaro.

Yeah, you did. A detective is supposed to protect his partner. I did a pretty poor job of that... And I got my client hurt too.

[ He shakes his head. ] John Smith and I are equally responsible. Blaming yourself is unproductive.

The scariest the Boss had ever been was when I got one of our clients hurt. I'd never seen him like that before. 'Only the lowest scum would endanger their client', he told me.

When he gave me his hat he told me to become a man worthy of wearing it. A man that gets his client hurt is far from worthy of it.

...I see.

[ It looks like there's still a lot Philip doesn't understand. He picks idly at his stitches, processing all of that. ]

For what it's worth, then, I forgive you.

Oi, don't touch that. Everything else needs to stay right where it is. [He reaches over to pull his shirt back down where it belongs.]

Thanks, Partner. [Some of the guilt does lift from his face, but he still needs to go talk to John.]

[ He jumps in surprise, but obediently tugs his shirt back down.

He's quiet for a few long moments, during which his hand goes up to rub at the collar around his neck. ]

He was able to render us unconscious with no more than the press of a button. There must be a tranquilizer of some sort stored in our collars.

[He reaches up and touches his too.] Yeah. I almost got a piece of that asshole, too.

Mm. [ He sighs, and then he sounds a little more agitated. ] As long as we are wearing these, we're completely at the mercy of our jailers.

Shotaro, where is this "hope" you spoke so highly of?

We're still alive, aren't we?

So what?!

That's the most important thing. We live to fight another day.

Fight how, when any attempt can be countered as easily as swatting a bug? Shotaro, there's nothing we can do!

Any way we can. But we'll have to be more careful than yesterday. They made you cry and I'm not going to let them get away with it.

[ He drops his hands into his lap, looking defeated.

It's not that he wants the situation to be hopeless; it's just that, even with his """superior intellect""" he still can't think of any way out of this. ]

And I'm not inclined to forgive them for what they've done to you or John Smith. I simply... [ He rakes a hand through his hair, dislodging the clips in it. ]

Get some rest, Philip. I think we both need a nap after that. [But he doesn't seem to be in a hurry to get back up. He lifts his lower leg up and glares at his stump.]

[ He pulls his clips out properly and sets them aside. ] I don't think I'll be sleeping for a while.

If you'd rather have something to take your mind off of it, could you do me a favor?

What do you have in mind?

[He pulls his CP card out of his pocket.] Could you go and buy me a crutch? Hopping around is exhausting.

[ He takes the card with a small smile. ] No problem. Feel free to wait here until I've returned.

[ Upsy-daisy. He cringes, since he's feeling a little sore now that the anesthetic's worn off, but at least he can walk. ]

[He was kind of sore over that woman keeping his hat. She had no right to wear it. Sure, he had a spare, but it was the principle of the thing.] Haaaah~ I guess I'll have to replace that hat too.
