"Except it wasn't just my neck on the line this time," he answered. "It was a lot of people we both cared about. I know it was the decision that ended in the least tears, but I still had to convince a few people that never had killed anyone and probably never would have that it was a good idea to pick him. And I wasn't even sure if I was right." If he'd been wrong the whole group of them would have been dead by that point.

"But you were right." Philip had been quite impressed with Shotaro's detective's intuition. "You saved those people, Shotaro."

He sniffed skeptically. "Yeah, by killing an innocent man."

[decideformyself]

"A man who had already killed multiple times," Philip corrected him.

[tanteiotaku]

"He wouldn't have had to if he wasn't framed for killing people." Or existing while a Deadman. Whichever the real grave crime was. "And we know this place is a testing ground."

[decideformyself]

That much was true...

"Then you're able to let him off the hook, but not yourself," Philip observed. "Curious."

[tanteiotaku]

That left him without anything to say. That was true, he supposed. Maybe he really was exhausted. A man was supposed to act decisively, right? Terui had done that. And he had done that. Why was he feeling horrible about it? He shifted so he was laying down in Philip's bed.

Philip moved over slightly and pulled his knees up to give Shotaro more room.

"You did what had to be done. Isn't that the hard-boiled decision?" This was all so difficult for him to understand.

[tanteiotaku]

He sighed again. "Probably..." He took the hat off where it was attached to his belt and covered his face with it.

Shotaro was so strange. Philip couldn't understand him, and that just intrigued him even further. He just watched Shotaro lying there curiously.

After several minutes a light snore signaled that he'd certainly felt comfortable enough to fall asleep.

Shaking his head, Philip pulled the blanket up over Shotaro's shoulders.

Now he had something to do.
