The library as its own organization was founded in 1973, a direct result of the British Library Act of 1972; originally, it was a division of the British Museum. For quite a while the library was split among several buildings, but eventually it was consolidated to one building for a time during the late 90's to early 2000's, however items of less popularity were eventually moved to a facility in Yorkshire.
